to know myself

T H E   C O L D

by Wendell Berry

How exactly good it is
to know myself
in the solitude of winter,

my body containing its own
warmth, divided from all
by the cold; and to go

separate and sure
among the trees cleanly
divided, thinking of you

perfect too in your solitude
your life withdrawn into
your own keeping

-to be clear, poised
in perfect self suspension
toward you, as though frozen.

And having known fully the
goodness of that, it will be
good also to melt.

And how exactly good it is to drink hot coffee on a weekend afternoon. To linger at the kitchen table with a thick book. To indulge a little, in whipped cream. To feel oneself happily alone, to feel oneself.

Not quite winter yet, really, but trying to embrace the idea of it ahead of it actually happening. Snow is predicted later this week. It will come whether we dread it or welcome it...

  1. true of so many things: "It will come whether we dread it or welcome it." Hope you have a lovely week.

  2. Thankfully there are so many redeeming qualities in autumn and winter --that the dreaded bitter cold and grey weather can not shake even the most devout in their joyousness.
